How 'junk science' has been put on trial

Article Abstract:

In 1979 a claim was made that the drug Bendectin was causing birth defects and testimony by so-called scientific experts eventually led to this drug being withdrawn from sale. It was very good for combating morning sickness and was sold in the UK as Debendox. On close investigation no evidence could be produced to prove these claims against the drug. The huge costs of litigation and defending against accusations have often led to unfair settlements being made out of court. There is a move to exclude this 'junk science' from trials but there is also much opposition to excluding opinion.

'Murder' of an old cathedral

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable controversy surrounding plans to demolish St Vibiana's cathedral in Los Angeles and replace it with a new $50 million structure designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. There are plans to use some of the old cathedral in the new structure, but even this concession has not been welcomed by opponents of the scheme, who are calling for an environmental review. They are in turn being strongly opposed by Cardinal Roger Mahoney, who has threatened to take the new cathedral to a site outside the city if the dispute is not resolved soon.

Welcome home, OJ: don't expect a party

Article Abstract:

O.J. Simpson has been acquitted of murder, but will find it very hard to return to 'normal' life. Many ordinary Americans are not prepared to forget the fact that he was under suspicion, and do not feel that he should be given extensive media coverage and treated with sympathy. Some organisations with which he was associated have tried to distance themselves from him, as have a number of celebrities.
