Viewing the world through Russia's window on the West

Article Abstract:

The democratic council of St Petersburg, Russia, supports the mayor Anatoly Sobchak in backing president Boris Yeltsin in the referendum on Apr 25, 1993. The councillors of most Russian cities are ex-Communists. St Petersburg deputies followed lessons in law and politics after their election in 1990, so debate is effective. Privatisation of shops and small businesses has progressed faster than in other areas but some residents object to the inequality this brings.

Yeltsin under fire as rouble is devalued

Article Abstract:

Russia has devalued the ruble following assertions that no such move was planned. Russians have sought to purchase US dollars, though no unrest has been reported. The devaluation has been presented as necessary for the defense of the national economy. Payment of foreign debt in rubles has also been subject to a moratorium of three months, in a move described as a restructuring. Russia's main banks welcome the stabilization package which they see as appropriate.
