How the Post Office can be set free

Article Abstract:

The Post Office is competing against other national postal service companies which are making acquisitions, such as TNT, acquired by the Dutch Post Office. The Post Office has to give part of its profits to the United Kingdom central government, and cannot easily respond to moves by competitors. The Post Office should be given greater freedom to invest, and is already faced with competition and the need to make a profit, which impose discipline. A change in culture and incentives is needed , but privatization is not the only way to do this.

Can we learn to love excessive profits?

Article Abstract:

Profits that may initially appear to be excessive could in fact be socially acceptable. High profits could offer a reward for running risk, as well as providing an incentive to innovation. They could also supply funding for additional innovation. This is reflected clearly in the pharmaceutical industry, which is the most profitable industry in the world. The same arguments can also be used in the case of the property industry, where financiers of large developments take considerable risks.
