Howard's dismal legacy - Straw's great opportunity

Article Abstract:

UK home secretary Michael Howard has failed to ensure that government promises on a number of important issues are fulfilled. Prisons are still seriously overcrowded, for example, and changes in sentencing policy may mean that 25 new prisons will be required over the next 12 years. Shadow home secretary Jack Straw will inherit many problems if the Labour party wins the forthcoming general election. The best approach he could take would be to dramatically reduce the prison population, thus freeing funds for use in programmes such as family centres and youth schemes.

Single mums and the curse of Catholicism

Article Abstract:

The fact that the UK still has the highest number of teenage pregnancies in Europe is mainly the result of an extremely ambivalent attitude towards contraception. This in turn means that many teenagers remain ignorant about contraception, especially as sex education lessons are inadequate. Many teenage girls are unwilling to take the pill, as they regard it as filling their bodies with unnatural chemicals, while half-truths still surround all forms of contraception.

Divorce: our century's great liberator

Article Abstract:

The current political conflict over the Family Law Bill, which will put an end to the concept of fault and blame in divorce, overlooks the fact that divorce is actually regarded positively by many people. Politicians fail to acknowledge that people do not divorce simply for the sake of it, and that divorce can often be a very bitter and distressing process. Against this background, divorce should be seen as a liberator, freeing people from miserable relationships.
