A closed subject?

Article Abstract:

The UK's Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) is believed to have recommended the closure of the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Cambridge, England, thus achieving savings of around 1 million pounds sterling a year. The possibility of closing this facility has attracted considerable criticism, especially from Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees. He has expressed concern about the lack of consultation involved in the PPARC's decision. John Battle, the new minister for science and technology, will now have to make a very difficult decision about the observatory's future.

Stone Age man had the time of his life

Article Abstract:

It has gradually become apparent over recent years that Stone Age society was a lot more sophisticated than has traditionally been assumed. Stone Age people had a rich spoken language, they ate a balanced diet and had a strong social structure in which women played a key role. Life was a lot easier for them than has generally been believed, and they lived almost as long as people do today. The most significant sign that Stone Age society was very advanced is evidence of the respect paid to the dead.

The strain to gain falls mainly on the brain

Article Abstract:

The UK continues to suffer a serious brain drain, with many scientists and professionals choosing to work abroad, where they feel that they have greater financial and academic support for their work. A recent example is that of Professor Mike Mullan, who is undertaking pioneering research into Alzheimer's disease at the University of South Florida, having previously worked at St Mary's Hospital in London. This continued brain drain will inevitably have a serious impact on the UK's competitiveness.
