Human rights and new openness at centre of report

Article Abstract:

Chris Patten's report on the future of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) recommends the creation of a completely new Policing Board. This board would be responsible for holding the Chief Constable and the police service to account. The report indicates that the RUC remains rather militaristic and hierarchical, and stresses the need for both the Catholic and the nationalist communities to be able to identify with the name and symbols of the police service. It recommends renaming the RUC the Northern Ireland Police Service.

If you can't defend it, don't do it

Article Abstract:

It seems to be regarded as acceptable for MPs to write novels, present television programmes or write newspaper columns, but not for them to a company director. This approach to MPs' non-parliamentary activities is very narrow-minded, as it prevents them gaining valuable experience of business and industry. Many observers who criticise MPs for becoming involved in business and question their ethical standards in fact have no idea what the role of a non-executive director actually involves.
