'I thought I might be made into a martyr.' (Israel undercover squads)

Article Abstract:

On Apr 20 1992 Atef Kazaz, 19, and Mahmoud Abu Dosh, 17, were stopped and shot by the Israeli army although they had not committed any offence. Undercover squads are a fact of life in Israel. They usually operate with collaborators and 19 Palestinians were shot in 1992 with no public inquiry or explanation of targeting. Atef and Mahmoud went to the house of their employer who is a collaborator and were shot without warning. Four days afterwards they were arrested and during military interrogation they were asked to collaborate. No witnesses were allowed and the hearing was in Hebrew without translation.

High price for Palestinian dreams

Article Abstract:

Negotiations on 'interim arrangements' between Palestinians and Israelis were held on Aug 15 1992. Israel will retain 70% of the West Bank. Israel is offering the Palestinians powers to set up an interim administrative council with less than 20 elected members. Itwould have no legislative authority and its powers would be limited to education, health, trade and criminal justice. Foreign policy and military laws would be kept under Israel's control. This is the best settlement Israel has offered so far and provision will be made for a permament transfer of power if the system works.

Palestinians say court ruling is setback to peace

Article Abstract:

The deportation of 413 Palestinians was ruled legal by Israel's Supreme Court providing individuals were deported separately and they had the right of appeal. Mass deportation would be illegal. Israel expected US help in avoiding UN sanctions. An Israeli army officer was to collect a list of names of Palestinians wishing to appeal at Zemraya Gate. This would be taken to deportees' solicitors and the appeals committees.
