How to teach the teachers

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable criticism in the UK of the main approaches to training teachers, which involve primary school teachers taking a four-year undergraduate course leading to a BEd and secondary school teachers taking a subject-specific degree and then a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Some observers believe that higher education institutions should not be involved in training teachers, and that teacher training should involve a lot more direct classroom experience. Debate on this issue is being fuelled by a government Green Paper proposing innovative approaches to recruiting trainee teachers, especially for the secondary sector.

Two sides to every story

Article Abstract:

British head teachers may not fully understand the weaknesses of their schools, though they may have a clear idea of the schools' strengths, according to a survey by the Office of Standards in Education (Ofsted), the schools inspectorate. Schools have more evidence with which to make assessments of their own abilities, while the inspectorate is better able to make comparisons. There could be advantages from greater cooperation between schools and inspectors, which could mean that they could learn from each other.
