'If I'd abandoned science, I'd have given up my childhood dream.' (author and scientist Simon Singh)
Article Abstract:
Travelling to South Africa in 1991 to work with an organization that was attempting to assist with education and development was a very frightening experience, according to scientist and author Simon Singh. He had not encountered any racism at all when growing up in the UK and working as a scientist, but felt very uncomfortable initially in South Africa. He found that he began to learn about himself while his pupils were learning. His time in South Africa allowed him to discover what he wanted to do and why he is the way he is.

Stokely Carmichael
Article Abstract:
Political activist Stokely Carmichael lived in Trinidad until the age of 11, and then went to join his parents in the US. He was showing clear signs of being a left-wing radical by the time he left high school. He rejected scholarships at several mainly white universities, choosing instead to study at the mainly black Howard University in Washington DC. He graduated in 1964 and then became a full-time civil rights activist, working as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Co-ordinating Committee.
