If we're all to be commoners, why keep the pomp and ceremony?

Article Abstract:

The UK's established structures are undergoing scrutiny and reform, but it remains uncertain where this process will end and what consequences constitutional change will have for the government. Indeed, the reform of the House of Lords is becoming a significant hurdle which Prime Minster Tony Blair must overcome if he is to be able to convert his vision of a new society into reality. He is aware that reform of the House of Lords is likely to become unpopular with voters if it takes up too much parliamentary time.

Mr Blair's problem is that he is not in control of this war

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has shown himself to be Nato's most determined leader in terms of standing up to Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic. However, the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, is really President Bill Clinton's war, and his instincts in this matter differ from Blair's. Blair is aware that any solution other than an independent Kosovo would fall short of the moral stance he has taken against Serb action in Kosovo. This is a humanitarian matter, and it cannot be fully resolved unless the ethnic Albanians are able to return to Kosovo.
