Imperfect past, cloudy present, bright future

Article Abstract:

The 1992-93 cricket season in South Africa has been fantastic according to Ali Bacher, the man behind the country's return to international cricket after 22 years of isolation. As soon as the way was open for players to come to South Africa to represent their countries, India, Pakistan and the West Indies were top of the list, the white countries England, Australia and New Zealand having to wait. The factor that clinched recognition by the International Cricket Council (ICC) ws the amalgamation of the white and non-white South Afican cricket bodies into the United Cricket Board of South Africa in 1991.

Poland's past bites back

Article Abstract:

The Polish secret police department, formerly the People's Militia, keeps files of information about prominent people which was gathered from ordinary individuals threatened with the loss of their job or lifestyle. The new leaders in democratic Poland have passed some strange laws permitting former communists to operate financial swindles and refuse to prosecute Communist crimes. This may be because of blackmail with these files. Neo-Communists in parliament and blackmailed ministers brought down Jan Olszewski's government when he attempted to expurgate the system.

Bee's sticky end gives insight into the past

Article Abstract:

Scientists have succeeded in reviving spores of bacteria found within the gut of a 25-million-year-old bee preserved in amber. The spores were cultivated on a nutrient jelly, and gradually opened up to allow the bacteria inside to grow. The bacteria was identified as belonging to the same group of microbes which exist in the gut of modern bees. Tests designed to prove that the bateria was genuinely prehistoric indicated that its genetic material was similar but not identical to present-day forms.
