The man who knew better than Lineker

Article Abstract:

The England football team has had two draws and a defeat in the European Championship in Sweden under Graham Taylor's management. A 47-year-old family man, he played as an England schoolboy and for Grimsby and Lincoln City. After injury at 28 he became manager of Lincoln City, then of Watford. His technique involves tough discipline. In 1987 he moved to Aston Villa which he helped back up the First Division. Press reaction to managing the England team is normal for the job; under Taylor England has only had two defeats in 24 games.

Mother, I hardly knew you

Article Abstract:

A writer describes her feelings about her mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Her frustration about the apparent lack of support she received from her mother is discussed, and her view that Alzheimer's disease was a form of escapism for her mother is presented. The impact of the discovery of her mother's diaries on her opinions about her mother is investigated, and her realization that her mother was in fact standing back and letting her flourish is described.
