Western military action against Afghanistan in response to the terrorist attacks in the US looks likely to be in two stages. There will be an initial missile, bomb and special forces campaign against Taliban troops and the al-Qa'ida terrorist network. This will be followed some time later by a larger campaign using air power, special forces and intelligence.

Pubs, restaurants, bars and nightclubs in Belfast, Northern Ireland, have been deserted since the conflict began, and small shops may not survive this sudden drop in income. There is almost no public transport in the city in the evenings, and many ordinary people are leaving the city to escape the tension.
