Indonesians fear approach of 'day the Earth shakes.'

Article Abstract:

The political situation in Indonesia has been very tense for some years. Indonesians have been given no outlet for their political aspirations, and this has made them very frustrated. Elections have been rigged, and there have been widespread fears of renewed bloodshed, as happened in 1965 to 1966 following a failed coup against Sukarno, the first president of independent Indonesia. Ordinary people are now turning against President Suharto, but there does not seem to be anyone to replace him.

Strangers in their own land

Article Abstract:

There has been a significant rise in racist attacks in the Czech Republic since the 1989 revolution. Gypsies, known as Roma, are a frequent target of these attacks. The Roma believe that violent attacks against them are sanctioned by the police, who take no action to stop them. In contrast, outside the skinhead and Fascist movements non-Roma immigrants are treated well. Indeed, an attack on a Sudanese student prompted politicians to introduce new anti-racism initiatives.

Two million displaced in a tropical version of Bosnia

Article Abstract:

The violence that pervades Colombian society is the result of political conflict, rather than the cultivation and trading of drugs. The Colombian establishment has for many years failed to respond to calls for a fairer society, while left-wing groups have resorted to violence. The army is clearly collaborating with death squads, and is therefore adding to the pressure under which ordinary people live. There are now 2 million displaced civilians.
