Prisoner of the press

Article Abstract:

Journalists have no respect at all for personal privacy, according to Jenny Teague, who became the youngest mother in the UK when she gave birth in Mar 1997 at the age of 12. She was followed everywhere by journalists, and found this very distressing. She initially did not speak to any journalists, but her story still appeared in the newspapers, which she found embarrassing. She eventually agreed to meet a journalist from the News of the World, who was very sympathetic. However, she feels that media interest in her story will never really fade.

Why every child needs a media manager

Article Abstract:

Mary Bell Orders, which were created in the UK in 1984, are designed to protect children from intrusive media attention. They are a recognition that children are very susceptible to publicity and that they should be protected from terrible truths. However, some journalists feel that there is rarely genuine evidence that publicity can bring trauma for children. They are also concerned that criminal parents could use the spurious privacy needs of their children as a shield, thus overlooking the rights of crime victims.

A labour of love at the new Express

Article Abstract:

Claims by Derek Draper, former aide to Peter Mandelson and then political columnist at the Express newspaper, that his column was vetted by Mandelson highlight the importance of political columnists being neutral. Political columnists naturally talk to lobbyists, spin doctors and politicians, but must take care to make their own judgements. The Express seems to be moving towards New Labour, but must ensure that it maintains its credibility.
