Courses that are failing our journalists

Article Abstract:

There is growing concern about the UK's National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). In particular, colleges and universities which run their own undergraduate and postgraduate journalism courses are unhappy that students must take additional NCTJ examinations, for which they have to pay. Indeed, the leading journalism schools are now severing links with the NCTJ. There has also been criticism from within the newspaper industry itself about standards of journalism training.

So what does The Guardian stand for?

Article Abstract:

The Guardian newspaper seems to have no clear principles any more. Indeed, its main purpose seems to be to create problems for the government in a rather unconstructive way. It is often a mouthpiece of Old Labour views, but fails to really back the Old Labour agenda in its editorials. The Guardian should be the most influential newspaper in the UK, but is in fact having very little influence on policy, with politicians giving it little attention.

The day the Times stood still

Article Abstract:

Officials at the New York Times were forced to take the newspaper's website offline for more than nine hours after it was disrupted by hackers. This took place on what was expected to be one of the newspaper's busiest Sundays of 1998, as the Starr report had only just been published online. The newspaper's technology reporter, John Markoff, believes that break-ins of this kind represent a significant threat to the global computer network.
