Don't argue with a 500lb turtle on heat

Article Abstract:

Ascension is known for both its unusual geology and its turtles, which travel to breed on the island from feeding grounds off coastal Brazil. Some 2,000 green turtles come ashore at Long Beach to lay eggs each season, between Jan and Apr. The island is around 10 miles across, and visitors may therefore wish to hire a car. Attractions include colonies of sooty terns, while visitors to nearby Boatswain Bird Island can see the Ascension frigate bird, along with boobies, tropic birds and other species.

The crown's jewels

Article Abstract:

Residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands, the UK's least well-known West Indian colony, are extremely friendly to outsiders. Grand Turk is very attractive, and offers some of the finest snorkelling and diving in the world. Few tourists visit South Caicos, and this means that the beaches there are uncrowded. Providenciales has 12 hotels along its 12 miles of broad white beach. The only drawbacks to the Turks and Caicos Islands are the food and the lack of local culture.

The great escape to a no-frills parador

Article Abstract:

The Benedictine abbey of San Salvador in the village of Palacios de Benaver, Spain, dates from the 12th century. It has a 22-room guesthouse made from a former elementary school. The rooms are furnished very simply, although they have modern en suite bathrooms. Most of the guests are seeking peace and quiet, rather than a deep religious experience. The nuns are very welcoming, and guests are invited to join in their religious observances.
