Into the heart of the hero's homeland

Article Abstract:

South Africa's Transkei region, which is now part of the Eastern Cape Province, remains largely untouched by modern civilization. Local people, who are mainly involved in subsistence farming, are extremely friendly, and the region has beautiful scenery. On the coast, the only settlement of any size is Port St Johns, which has deserted sandy beaches and a very tropical atmosphere. Inland, the main town is Umtata, where visitors can gain a fascinating insight into African life. It is also worth visiting Qunu, the birthplace of President Nelson Mandela.

A brief encounter with Noel

Article Abstract:

Noel Coward, who was born in 1899, has come to be associated with values which are rapidly disappearing in modern society. He had a certain reticence, and always regarded sex and sexuality as a matter of good taste. He used language as a defensive weapon, and often said the opposite of what was actually meant. He increasingly shielded himself from society as the 20th century placed more pressures on him, and this presents significant challenges for his biographers.

Oriel the wizard of Walworth

Article Abstract:

Sculptress Oriel Harwood is very frustrated by the fact that she has so far been unable to win a large commission, even though her work is becoming more widely known. She rejects modern arbiters of good taste, and regards the modern dictatorship of interiors with despair. Her work has become very refined, and is tending towards the neo-romantic. Its scale and extravagance makes it very suitable for film sets, and she has already become involved in film work.
