Investments

Article Abstract:

The recent very strong interest in the National Lottery in the UK shows that most people do not approach savings and investment decisions in a very logical way. It is clear that an individual's chances of winning the lottery are extremely small, but still people continue to invest in lottery tickets, especially if there is a large jackpot. All savings and investment decisions involve assessing the odds involved, and this must be undertaken in a rational manner. Generally, the odds are in favour of investing in equities, rather than keeping money in a bank or building society.

Gilts come in from the cold

Article Abstract:

Gilts have for many years been shunned by the investment community, but are in fact becoming an attractive and sensible option for investors. This view is supported by Barclays Capital's annual gilts-equity survey. This identifies equities as the best asset class for long-term investors, but also states that gilts are increasingly becoming an attractive alternative to equities. Economic fundamentals are favouring gilts, and investors are also benefiting from a change in the relative valuation of gilts to equities.
