Investment pact sparks turf war

Article Abstract:

Mixed views are being expressed about the Multilateral Agreement on Investment, which aims to prevent governments treating investors differently on the basis of their country of origin. It will also ensure that governments cannot introduce regulations requiring investors to use a specified proportion of local labour or purchase a certain amount of their goods from local businesses. The World Development Movement believes that it is sometimes justified to discriminate against certain countries. It also feels that making companies commit themselves to stay for a minimum period can sometimes be justified.

Time to face up to the euro

Article Abstract:

Accountants report that some UK government departments and local authorities are not preparing sufficiently for the single European currency. Some feel that the government is not doing enough to encourage public bodies to consider how they will be affected by the euro. Public bodies should be aware that the UK will not have the three-year transition period which the countries joining European economic and monetary union in the first wave will enjoy. This means that they should begin making preparations already.
