'UK first' deal that could set Europe at war

Article Abstract:

France and Germany have both reacted very negatively to the 7 billion pounds sterling takeover of GEC's Marconi defence electronics division by British Aerospace. Thomson CSF sought to convince GEC until the very last minute that it would be a more appropriate partner for Marconi than British Aerospace, but was unsuccessful in its efforts. There has been a particularly negative reaction in Germany, as it had seemed certain until recently that British Aerospace would merge with Daimler-Chrysler Aerospace, rather than with Marconi.

Comment:

Has been stung by criticisms of its merger with British Aerospace PLC

ScottishPower turns tables with US buy

Article Abstract:

It is likely that a number of other UK electricity companies will follow the example of ScottishPower, which has made an all-paper 4.4 billion pounds sterling takeover of PacifiCorp. This follows a period during which a considerable number of UK electricity companies were taken over by US electricity companies. Mixed views have been expressed about how ScottishPower will fare in the US, where there is a very different regulatory regime.
