Saudis turn their backs on the Taliban, a monster they helped create

Article Abstract:

Saudi Arabia has since 1994 shown strong support for Afghanistan's Taliban regime. However, it has now severed all diplomatic links with Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia seems to hope that the international community will forget its involvement in creating the oppressive regime in Afghanistan.

Iran's revolution prepares to take a democratic turn; the west may be missing a historic opportunity for rapprochement with Tehran

Article Abstract:

The US has stated that it will only begin talks with Iran if the latter country agrees to discuss nuclear weapons and the peace process. This stance is a misguided one, failing to take the opportunity to establish more positive links with the new government of President Mohamed Khatami. The US is not taking into account the fact that a number of leading figures in Iran are now trying to introduce a greater degree of democracy and boost the intellectual and physical freedom of ordinary Iranians.

'Thousands massacred by Taliban.'

Article Abstract:

Conflict could break out between the Sunni Muslim Taliban, who are backed by Saudi Arabia, and Iranian troops and Revolutionary Guards exercising along the border between Afghanistan and Iran following news that the Taliban have killed large numbers of Shia Muslims around the city of Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan. It is reported that the dead could include 10 Iranian diplomats and an Iranian journalist. Other reports indicate that the murders could have been carried out by members of the Hezbi Islami, Pashtu allies of the Taliban.
