The journey from peace table to battlefield seems so swift

Article Abstract:

Comparisons can be made between the Northern Irish peace process and developments in the Middle East. There will not be a sudden increase in violence if the Northern Ireland Executive collapses, but there will be a period in which republican hardliners will gain support for their claim that the Protestants do not wish to reach a peace settlement.

Ireland has paid a high price for its dishonest myth-making

Article Abstract:

The IRA's decision to decommission its weapons can be seen as a shrewd response to the terrorist attacks in the US. It is now essential that some form of Truth Commission is established, as failure to do so would mean that the evils that have been committed become mythologized.

Even the smallest gesture from the IRA could salvage peace

Article Abstract:

A peace agreement has been reached in Northern Ireland, but there seems to be a lack of will to actually put this agreement into effect. Punishment attacks are still taking place, while the IRA and loyalist paramilitaries have not handed over their weapons. It is no longer safe to assume that common sense will eventually prevail in Northern Ireland. The IRA must make a symbolic gesture towards decommissioning in order to prove its commitment to the peace process.
