Is Jacques a Cambridge chap?

Article Abstract:

The philosopher M. Jacques Derrida, Directeur d'Etudes, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris may be awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by Cambridge University if his nomination on May 16 1992 is agreed. If so it will be accepting a broader conception of the subject than has been known since 1945. His works are not studied by British undergraduates. His themes are the metaphysics of presence, an open-ended process of interpretation and reinterpretation and deconstruction. Many philosophers claim his philosophy is ridiculous, but Cambridge University states that the conferral of an honorary degree signifies eminence and not necessarily agreement with the honorand's work.

Principles of passion and hatred

Article Abstract:

Philosopher Bertrand Russell was extremely influential in shaping 20th century attitudes, especially in establishing 'analytical philosophy.' However, most people remember him for his political campaigning, rather than his philosophical work. In the area of philosophy, his views were heavily influenced by his personal experiences and beliefs. He was a lonely and misanthropic character, and hid his feelings even from those closest to him.

The philosopher's new mind

Article Abstract:

Philosophers' faith in important new insights is restored by Danie C Dennett with his entertaining book 'Consciousness Explained.' His clear, amusing writing attempts to explain the meaning of consciousness to lay people and philosphers. His theory shows that a conscious computer might be developed. He compares human brains to the parallel processors of computers, which perform several actions at once.
