Oxbridge entrants face real university challenge

Article Abstract:

The selection procedure for Oxford and Cambridge universities is extremely arbitrary, and the successful candidates do not really represent the best of the country's 18-year-olds. Despite this, degrees from these universities continue to be held in high esteem. Strong emphasis is place on the references written by schools for the candidates, but these have to be produced very early, and cannot therefore be an accurate prediction of A-level performance. Similarly, there are problems with selection by interview.
