Is the American experience exceptional enough for Wall St?

Article Abstract:

There is general sense of self-confidence on Wall Street. Within this, confidence in the exceptional performance of US companies and of the US economy is a key element. Twice as many investors believe Wall Street will rise as go down. However, it is possible to argue that this level of confidence will not persist. Investors will have to accept that very strongly performing companies may co-exist with a less strong stock market. There is no doubt that the US economy will enter a period of slower growth, but it remains to be seen whether companies will use this to boost their productivity.

Contented voters borrow to buy the American dream

Article Abstract:

There seems to be widespread contentment in the US with the state of the country's economy. However, the fact that families are now spending more than they earn should be a cause for concern. In order to continue to sustain demand, ordinary Americans must now place themselves deeper and deeper in debt. There will be a very strong reaction when it becomes apparent that interest rates will not fall any further and could even begin to rise again.
