Unions must realise this is the only Labour government they have

Article Abstract:

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has been unable to exert as much influence over the UK's current Labour government as over previous Labour governments. Trade union leaders meeting at the TUC conference must be aware that significant changes have taken place since the last time the Labour party was in power. Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown would take very firm action against a public sector strike, as their economic credibility would depend on defeating such a strike. Unions must move away from the past and moderate their demands if they are to be really listened to by the government.

Rupert Murdoch features in three challenges to Blair

Article Abstract:

The Sun newspaper, owned by Rupert Murdoch, is campaigning on a number of issues which are of considerable importance to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. These are the Labour party's manifesto commitment to give statutory recognition rights to trade unions with the support of 51% of the relevant workforce, the balance between the freedom of the press and the individual's right to privacy, and predatory pricing. It would be possible to reach compromises on each of these issues. Trade union recognition will in the long term be most significant for the government.
