Israeli 'terrorism' hands a gift to Egypt's Islamist rebels

Article Abstract:

Egypt's Gema'a Islamiya (Islamic movement) has been in a state of crisis since late 1996. Sayed Khaled Ibrahim, the 'emir' of the movement in the city of Aswan, Egypt, called for a truce in Mar 1997, and Muslim prisoners at military courts and the Torah jail complex have also been calling for a ceasefire. However, leaders of the movement in upper Egypt have vowed to continue the struggle against President Mubarak's regime. The Egyptian government is facing particular difficulties in its relations with Israel, with Gema'a accusing it of making peace with a terrorist state.

Egyptian antagonists square up

Article Abstract:

A courtroom in the Egyptian Army's Supreme Court east of Cairo has seen the trial start for 42 prisoners, allegedly members of the Islamic Group el-Gemaat el-Islamiya, accused of extremist activities. Specifically they are accused of shooting against a boatful of tourists on the Nile, being involved in placing explosives and planning to overthrow the Egyptian government, this being a capital crime. They complain of torture in captivity and their wounds would seem to back up their claims.

Egyptian Islamists die in 'terror' jail

Article Abstract:

There are indications that the Egyptian government is treating jailed Islamist opponents extremely harshly in an effort to kill them before they are even brought to trial. It is believed that inmates at the Wadi al-Jadid prison complex have been beaten, starved and raped, and there have been at least 26 deaths of Islamist fundamentalists in recent months. Lawyers have been making unsuccessful attempts to visit the jail.
