Fur has become fashionable, with displays at summer 1997 fashion shows, and this will increase demand for the fur industry in Britain. Conditions on fur farms in Dorset and West Yorkshire, England, show the cruelty involved. The animals are housed in barren cages and show behavioral disorders such as repetitive actions. The mink would fare better if they could swim and had a tube to use for a refuge and as a plaything. The United Kingdom government willnot allow new mink farms to open but allows existing farms to operate.

The legal issues relating to squatting are considered, and the growing competition among squatters for the best properties is discussed.
