It will be a time of wars, willies and the World Cup. Lots of lovely news, in fact

Article Abstract:

There is considerable potential for 1998 to be a very interesting year in terms of high-profile news events. This would be in sharp contrast with 1997, when there was very little really noteworthy news. There could be extreme tension in the Middle East in 1998, for example, and economic turmoil in Asia could cast a shadow over the single European currency. Germany could elect a successor to Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and economic growth in the US could be negatively affected by problems in countries such as Japan, China and South Korea.

Mr and Mrs Jiang have a lovely day out (except for all those protesters)

Article Abstract:

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has attracted many protesters on his state visit to the UK. Police have tried to keep protesters away from him, but this has not always been possible. He has ignored the protesters, and has not shown any irritation at their presence. Events during his visit have included touring the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, London, England, and attending a reception to mark the 70th anniversary of the London branch of the Bank of China.

China: Fragile relations, handle with care

Article Abstract:

There is a strong desire in both the UK and China for Chinese President Jiang Zemin's state visit to the UK to mark the beginning of a more positive era in relations between the two countries. For this reason, officials in the UK are taking great care to ensure that protesters from pro-Tibetan and human rights groups will not be able to disrupt the visit. However, it seems unlikely that it will be possible to avoid exposing Jiang Zemin to protests.
