Heart of glass

Article Abstract:

It is now time to plan for growth, according to glass manufacturer Pilkington Chief Executive Paolo Scaroni. He does not feel that being Italian has influenced his approach towards reviving Pilkington's fortunes. He believes that Pilkington's problems arose from the fact that it had expanded through acquisition but had not properly integrated the companies it had taken over. He expresses admiration for the presentational abilities of British chief executives.

House prices have also risen again, and it is anticipated that consumer spending will be at high levels in the run-up to Christmas 2001. However, rising household debt will create serious problems when interest rates begin to go up again.
