It's the jobless over-forties who really need help

Article Abstract:

The UK government should focus its Welfare to Work programme on unemployed people aged over 40, rather than on the young unemployed. Men in their 40s and 50s who lose their job find it extremely difficult to get another one, and seem to have nowhere they can turn to for support. Society should not simply accept that older unemployed people will never work again, and the government should target job subsidies towards this age group. There are many areas of employment in which the experience of older men would be extremely useful.

A break-up to help avoid a meltdown

Article Abstract:

The way in which British Gas was privatised has led to the company experiencing many problems and having a very poor public image. This has in turn prompted moves to break the company up. In the short term, this will revive its fortunes, especially with the dismissal of chief executive Cedric Brown, who had been perceived as earning an excessively large salary. However, there remain a number of sensitive issues to resolved, and the UK government must still consider what kind of energy sector is emerging under market forces.
