The people's weapon needs supervision

Article Abstract:

The referendum has traditionally been regarded negatively in the UK, and has only been used as a tool of government on rare occasions. However, all three main political parties now favour a referendum before entering EMU, and there are also plans to use the referendum to decide other issues. It appears that the referendum has become part of the British Constitution, with political parties regarding it as a valuable way of avoiding responsibility for the outcome of a particular decision.

Doctors, nurses, midwives, hospitals - who needs 'em

Article Abstract:

Having a baby at home with no medical supervision is illegal in the UK, and the parents can actually be prosecuted. However, some women are prepared to take this risk, as they feel that they should be allowed to give birth privately and in the most natural way possible. They believe that excessive medical intervention can make the woman very tense, thus prolonging the labour and causing greater pain.

Article Abstract:

The government has handled the issue of health workers' pay very badly, having gone back at the last minute on its commitment to locally determined pay linked to productivity. This has provoked a conflict with nurses which could easily have been avoided. It is now vital to move towards a local pay policy of trusts are to take the management of their affairs seriously.
