PNG's private army spurs Australia into action

Article Abstract:

Australia has made considerable efforts to forge close links with Papua New Guinea, its former colony. These have included making a $12 million defence contribution and allocating $320 million in aid. However, the government of Papua New Guinea believes that Australia is hampering its efforts to deal with the secessionist conflict on Bougainville, which has been going on for some years. For this reason, Papua New Guinea has privatised the training of its armed forces, awarding a contract to military advisory company Sandline International.

The lure of the trough

Article Abstract:

Greed is an emotion which is present in every human being to a greater or lesser extent. Many people are quick to recognise greed in others, but often fail to see it in themselves. People often feel uneasy when they see others succumbing to uncontrollable greed, as children are taught from a very early age to try hard to conceal their greed. This emotion exposes people's real character in a very direct way, and can therefore cause considerable tension.

Trusts take care to lure private finance

Article Abstract:

The health service should look for private sector finance for capital schemes, according to a guide for NHS Trusts to the Private Finance Initiative. Trusts are also required to accept tenders from private companies for services, and this could lead to private concerns being responsible for areas such as pathology or even nursing care. These guidelines are likely to lead to a considerable increase in privatisation within the NHS.
