The last Nazi art scandal

Article Abstract:

The Nazis seized and broke up many art collections belonging to Jews before and during the second world war. Governments are now taking concerted action to address this problem, which will be a key issue at the Conference on Holocaust Era Assets at the end of Nov 1998. At a conference earlier in 1998, 39 countries made a commitment to identifying works of art looted by the Nazis and returning them. National museums are now creating databases to establish the origins of the works in their collections.

The secrets of the Scrolls

Article Abstract:

The Dead Sea Scrolls date from the age when Christ lived and have been famous for 50 years. They include the Copper Scroll which contains references to a buried treasure that may still exist. The scroll was discovered in 1952 and a work called 'The Treasure of the Copper Scroll' was published by John Allegro in 1960. The amount of treasure listed in the Copper Scroll may be less than is sometimes assumed, since the measures used may have been misinterpreted.

Scandal in a society of secrets

Article Abstract:

Annie Murphy's book 'Forbidden Fruit' about her affair with Bishop Eamonn Casey in Ireland is a best-seller but there is a typical Irish silence about the case. Journalists have not confronted or hounded the Bishop as they would others. Discussion would clear the air and permit a liberating climate. The Irish condemn Murphy, an outsider Irish-American, for speaking out.
