Why America doesn't care

Article Abstract:

This excerpt from the author's book 'The Culture of Contentment' shows that the underprivileged classes do not count when it comes to political elections in the United States. The Republican Party represents the comfortable. The Democrats also subscribe to the policy of contentment. Half the adult population does not vote, either because they are awaiting citizenship or because they cannot distinguish any difference between the candidates to benefit to their disadvantaged circumstances.

Will America pack up its troubles?

Article Abstract:

The US government has not succeeded in developing a clear policy on involvement in the conflict in Bosnia. It sought the supply of weapons to the Muslims, for example, but has also sanctioned arms sales from Iran. European governments are very concerned about these revelations, especially as the conflict in Bosnia is currently a sensitive political issue in the US. It is likely that decisions made by president Bill Clinton will hamper, rather than encourage, the peace process.

The strange death of civic America

Article Abstract:

There has been a decline in the amount of time Americans spend on informal socialising and visiting since 1965. The time taken up by activities associated with clubs and organisations has fallen by around half, and there has been a sharp decline in many types of collective political participation too. It is becoming clear that this is attributable to the large amount of time which the average American spends watching television.
