My life with Michael Howard

Article Abstract:

Home secretary Michael Howard and his ministers were very closely involved in the details of the day-to-day running of internal prison issues, according to Derek Lewis, the former director of prisons who is now taking legal action for wrongful dismissal. This goes against Howard's declaration that he was not responsible for operational matters, which allowed him to lay the blame with Derek Lewis when damaging reports were made on prison administration. This issue will give some interesting information about the degree of independence of the Prison Service.
