Why lawyers suppress the truth

Article Abstract:

The Director of Public Prosecutions needs to legislate to ensure all evidence is available. The Attorney General's 1981 guidelines on disclosure of documents are vague and permit discretionary withholding in certain cases. Michael Bibby was a Director of Public Prosecutions' legal officer in 1974 when Judith Ward was convicted although material existed which would have cleared her. The information was considered peripheral and limited disclosures were made because it was an IRA case. The prosecution apparently aimed to win regardless of fairness.

Hard facts from a 'year of truth'

Article Abstract:

Over the past year, the formerly Communist Eastern Europe has begun selling off many of its state enterprises. Germany's privatisation agency, the Treuhandanstalt, has succeeded in privatising almost half the companies targeted and unification has helped attract business. Privatisation programmes in other Eastern bloc countries have been more erratic. Poland has set up a stock market and a 'mass privatisation' programme. Hungary has made slow progress selling shares. Romania and Czechoslovakia have also developed privatisation schemes.
