Economic forecasts are as precise as the weather

Article Abstract:

It is extremely difficult for governments and central banks to decide on the best interest rate policy. Interest rates can have varying impacts on different social groups, and it is common for even experts to have very conflicting views on interest policy and on developments in the economy as a whole. Setting a viable interest rate police requires luck and judgement, as well as economic ability. Many professionals cannot understand why the Bank of England's monetary policy committee has chosen to put up interest rates again by 0.25%.

Spring fever affects unit trusts

Article Abstract:

Sales of unit trusts are currently extremely strong in the UK. Indeed, 10 billion pounds sterling of net new investment was made in unit trusts in 1996, and total net investment in unit trusts by ordinary investors reached a record of 1.6 billion pounds sterling in Apr 1997. The sector has been particularly boosted by a large rise in the number of unit trust PEPs, which now represent more than half of net new investments. Some observers are expressing concern that most of these sales are being achieved at a loss.
