Jack of all trades and master of most

Article Abstract:

The music of French-born avant-gardist composer Edgar Varese has some similarities with that of Gustav Mahler, according to Italian conductor Riccardo Chailly, who has been promoting the work of Varese since the early 1990s. He has now won Gramophone's Twentieth-Century Orchestral Award for 'The Complete Varese.' He is soon to tour in the US, and hopes to make audiences there aware of the musical relationship between Mahler and Varese. He finds recording very tiring, but welcomes the challenge of motivating players to perform at their very best in an empty room.

Cracking players - and paprika too

Article Abstract:

The Budapest Festival Orchestra tends to attract audiences who are not particularly demonstrative but who think carefully about the personal issues raised by the performance, according to conductor Ivan Fischer. He is prepared for the orchestra, which he formed with pianist Zoltan Kocsis in 1983, to take risks, and does not hesitate to take on players who do not have conventional personalities. He is keen to use the musicians' creative impulses as the basis for the orchestra's work.

We all need the kiss of the muse

Article Abstract:

Educational leaders in Western democracies pay very little attention to children's creative potential, according to conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt. He feels that people have become just components in a modular society. He refers to the rise in pseudo-religions, but feels that there is still a widespread desire for a genuine religious experience. He believes that there are inextricable connections between life, death and what he regards as the wonderful organic beauty of art.
