James Bond joins forces with PC Plod

Article Abstract:

The UK's new Security Service Bill, which is currently passing through the Commons, contains provisions which will give MI5 a role in fighting against organised crime. This will be a significant move away from MI5's traditional responsibilities, which have been restricted to dealing with threats to national security and to protecting the country's economic interests. Senior police officers are still very concerned about the danger of their role being undermined if MI5 becomes more involved with their work, and have sought assurances on this issue from the government.

Canteen culture: the language of bigotry

Article Abstract:

There is evidence to suggest that black and Asian police officers in the UK still face considerable challenges, even though there have been some improvements in dealing with racism within police forces. Some black and Asian officers report that they have to deal with racist comments every day, while others state that their white colleagues are now more aware of the importance of avoiding being seen as racist. A report from the Inspectorate of Constabulary indicates that senior police officers are unwilling to intervene to prevent racist language or behaviour.
