Africa: which way will the wind of change blow?

Article Abstract:

It is very easy to believe that Africa is in a very precarious state. Lawlessness and civil conflict appear to be rife, and there have been examples of atrocities in a significant number of African countries. However, there are now signs of more positive developments. Democracy is still not very firmly entrenched in many African countries, but oppositions are becoming more powerful. There is a growing belief that Africa can deal with its own problems, and it is possible that a genuine pan-African peace-keeping force may eventually emerge.

Organised labour in the US isn't working

Article Abstract:

The strike by newspaper workers in Detroit has attracted much less attention than it would have done in the past. Indeed, it is likely that the strike will eventually bring about the downfall of the Teamsters and the Newspaper Guild, the two unions which are leading it. In the post-industrial world, unions have seen their powers greatly eroded, and the strike has so far failed to affect the production or distribution of newspapers. It is clear that organised labour is gradually losing its effectiveness in the US.

Gun lobby lays down defensive barrage

Article Abstract:

US society is having to come to terms with the considerable influence which is now wielded by hardliners opposed to gun control. There is particular concern about the very extreme stance now being taken by the National Rifle Association (NRA), which is against even the smallest move to control guns. The bomb attack in Oklahoma City has increased most ordinary people's support for gun control, as the main suspect involved in the attack was a member of the NRA.
