Japan's fifth generation fails the artificial intelligence test

Article Abstract:

The Institute for New Generation Computer Technology (ICOT) exhibited the results of its 10-year project on artificial intelligence in Tokyo: Parallel Interface Machine (PIM) modules, the biggest having 256 parallel processors, were displayed. The project, to design a computer to process knowledge instead of figures, failed to achieve its stated aims but may have great impact. It will close in Apr 1993. A new 430 million pounds sterling project will investigate advanced areas such as artificial neurons linked by optical networks. Scientists from universities and industry will research 'Real World Computers.'

The Grammar Test? Too tricky for this Professor

Article Abstract:

There were many confusing elements in the sample test issued by the UK's School Curriculum and Assessment Authority (SCAA) to assist schools in preparing 14-year-olds for the pilot tests in English grammar, punctuation and spelling which they are currently taking. It is difficult to understand what kind of answer is required, and the marking guidelines do not really shed any light on this problem. It seems that the aims of the SCAA are unclear, and this is reflected in the grammar test itself.

Handle with care: the tricky business of shipping plutonium

Article Abstract:

Japan has its nuclear waste reprocessed into plutonium, the nuclear bomb raw material, at Sellafield, Cumbria, England and Cap de la Hague, Normandy, France. The plutonium is to be shipped back to Japan for use in civil reactors. A fast-breeder ractor, Monju, west Japan, is being prepared for Mar 1993, to enable Japan to create its own plutonium. Campaigners object to plutonium shipments because of risks of fire and explosion at sea, possible terrorist attack or hijack, and political example.
