Metal firms must modernise

Article Abstract:

The Polish steel industry is currently facing serious difficulties. Productivity declined by 11% in 1996, and the modernisation process which has been underway since 1991 requires further funding of around $2.5 billion. Considerable efforts are now being made to target strategic foreign investors as a source of funding. This has already been successful in the case of Huta Sendzimira, which has attracted interest from six large foreign concerns. In the copper industry, a number of significant privatisations are planned for 1997.

Contradictions at the heart of Europe

Article Abstract:

The main challenges now facing the European Union are the fact that Germany is reunified, moves by almost all eastern European countries and some former Soviet countries to seek membership and the terms of the Maastricht treaty. Enlargement will undoubtedly create economic problems, and will also place great strain on the European Union's institutions, causing them to grind to a halt. Widening the European Union could in fact lead to it being a much looser grouping.

Europe must modernise and reform to win the respect of its people

Article Abstract:

It is vital to have intelligent debate about Europe's future. Attention must focus on what is really happening, rather than on old prejudices. Activity on a European level must expand in some areas, such as crime prevention, but there are also areas in which national governments must retain control.
