Social Chapter? Go for it

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views among business leaders in the UK about the government's continued commitment to opting out of the Social Chapter. The Institute of Public Policy Research has stated that the UK should opt in to the Social Chapter if national prosperity is to improve, but this view is not generally shared by business leaders. There is particular opposition to the Social Chapter among large companies, even though they are in a better position than smaller companies to implement its provisions. In some cases, work practices are changing in advance of legislation.

Getting to the heart of matter

Article Abstract:

The European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, will from 2005 undertake experiments on a $6 billion Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This equipment is designed to bring about collisions between protons at higher energies than have ever been achieved before. CERN scientists anticipate that the wreckage from these collisions will show whether quarks are elementary particles. Up to 2,000 scientists will work together on the LHC experiments, which will be based around the existing 27km-diameter underground particle track.

Suckers for design

Article Abstract:

Effective design is clearly a strong element in business success, but it is often difficult to separate the role of design from advertising and external factors. It may be necessary to take a wider view of the concept of effectiveness, taking into account sociological and environmental benefits as well as basic manufacturing and market success. It is important to analyse past success, but this gives no guarantee of future success.
