Judith Ward: the 18 lost years

Article Abstract:

Judith Ward, wrongly imprisoned for the M62 coach bombing in 1974 when she was 23, intends to make up for her lost years by living life to the full. She spent 15 years in Durham prison's high security E wing, but tried not to become bitter. She varied her routine so as not to become too institutionalised, but did suffer depression. She studied for an Open University degree to prepare for life outside. She found prison officers heartless and intends to write about prison life. Her conviction was based on nitroglycerine tests by Dr Frank Skuse who is now discredited, and her own false statements when mentally disturbed.

When ordinary people stand up and shoot

Article Abstract:

British law is arranged to consider defendants' intentions but the general public expect stiff sentences for reckless drivers who kill although accidentally. In the case of Mr Owen shooting his son's killer who had served a year in prison, the judge warned the jury of the dangers of overruling court decisions but they demonstrated that the sentence was inadequate by not convicting Mr Owen. A London survey discovered that drink-driving was equated with mugging, sexual assaults, drug dealing and robbery. The law is not seen to protect people from attack as well as it does from crimes against property.
