Article Abstract:

Economists still seem to have little clear idea about what will hold European monetary union (Emu) together and make it a success in the long term. The UK, which is a monetary union on a small scale, offers a good example of how Emu will work. The UK's experience indicates that regional divergences are a key element of a monetary union. It is uncertain whether Emu will bring economic benefits, but it will only be successful in the long term if there is a high level of political integration.
