Karaoke sets off a song and dance

Article Abstract:

Laser discs (LD), which are CDs with video, are the latest innovation in sound electronics. LDs have superior standards of sound and picture compared to tape. The Japanese are attempting to break into the European market with laser discs which are a suitable accompaniment to karaoke. As European television and video technology is different from that of Japan and the United States, the systems are as yet incompatible. Film distributors are reluctant to invest in Britain as similar laser technology has failed to take off before.

Still afraid of the men in black

Article Abstract:

The lack of local diversity within the UK film industry and the industry's failure to expand has for many years been attributed to the fact that film distribution is dominated by the leading five US distributors. In fact, these distributors will distribute any film that they think will be profitable, regardless of its origins. They have developed an approach to distribution which is obviously successful, and should be regarded as having a positive impact on the film-going environment as a whole.
