Katie just wanted to help others

Article Abstract:

The murder of social worker Jenny Morrison by a mentally ill patient at a care-in-the-community hostel in London, England, has significant similarities with the murder of Katie Sullivan in 1992. Sullivan's family received no sympathy at all from the authorities, and felt that they only had each other to turn to. Her parents have fought very hard for justice, and have found it very difficult to cope with reports of similar incidents taking place subsequently. They are determined to improve standards of community care for the mentally ill, ensuring that untrained people are not left to deal alone with people who are too dangerous to be in the community.

Just what the patient ordered

Article Abstract:

The intra-operative salvage system makes it possible for a patient's own blood to be recycled during an operation, rather than using donated blood. The patient's blood is removed by suction and then fed through a tube to equipment where it is washed. Patients who receive their own blood back again are at lower risk of having the efficiency of their immune system compromised than patients who receive donated blood. This approach could also overcome problems with shortages of supplies of donated blood, especially in the pre-Christmas period.
