Killed in their beds: Red Cross workers who came to help and fell victim to Chechen horror

Article Abstract:

The International Committee of the Red Cross is suspending many of its operations in Chechnya following the murder of six of its workers there. This will be a severe blow to ordinary Chechens, who have suffered greatly as a result of Russian army attacks on civilian settlements. An uneasy peace deal had been reached, and the Red Cross was doing vital humanitarian work, repairing the extensive damage caused by the fighting. The attack on the aid workers has also prompted the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, which has no workers in Chechnya itself, to withdraw from neighbouring republics.

'The best thing that I could do is to die.' (Chechen separatist leader Dzhokhar Dudayev)(Interview)

Article Abstract:

Chechen separatist leader Dzhokhar Dudayev took very complicated precautions to minimise the risk of being targeted by Russian troops. However, he was eventually killed by a Russian rocket attack. He did not fear death at all, believing that the best thing that he could do was to leave this life. It is now unlikely that the Chechens will be able to replace him with a nationalist of similar status.
